Tommy Lee has become the latest musician to began filling real estate on his face with tattoos. The Motley Crue drummer showed off the new ink on his Instagram, which he says was made possible by Mario Barth Tattoo Studios.
The first tattoo is a Japanese phrase on his right cheek. The second piece is a music symbol and a heart. Nikki Sixx reacted to the art in the comments, stating “Looks awesome. I need a tune up with some of my ink too. Great.”
Post Malone, one of the most prominent musicians to invest in face tats, spoke to GQ Style about his ink, adding that there is much more to the equation than physical appearance.
“I’m a ugly-ass motherfucker,” he said. “[The face tattoos do] maybe come from a place of insecurity, to where I don’t like how I look, so I’m going to put something cool on there so I can look at myself and say, ‘You look cool, kid,’ and have a modicum of self-confidence, when it comes to my appearance.”
For his part, Slayer and Exodus guitarist Gary Holt indicated he was not a fan of the face tattoo trend.
“That’s what dudes looked like when they passed out on the bus — we’d Sharpie the fuck out of you,” Gary said. “And now that’s what they look like on purpose. It’s crazy. They’re all fucking Sharpied up.”
