Jack Thomas is an inspiration! Jack lost his arm in a horrific workplace accident 5 years ago. He was 17 at the time. Being a drummer and bass player since he was little, he wasn’t sure if he would be able to play music again. However, just 11 days after losing his right arm, Jack was back at the drums relearning how to play.
Jack started off doing simpler songs and as he got better, worked his way up to more technical and harder to play songs. Jack has also re-learned how to play bass as well. In the video for Drumeo, Jack says “I have been drumming and playing music basically my entire life. As well as bass guitar, music is everything that I am. About five years ago, I was involved in a tragic workplace accident that unfortunately resulted in the loss of my right arm. For a brief moment, I thought I’d never be able to play drums again.”
At the end of the video, Jack goes on to explain what happened. “I was working on a conveyor belt and it tripped out. Before I even had a chance to fight for myself, my arm was severed. I had to go inside and get myself some help, which is where I was told that ‘I’m sorry buddy, your arm is gone.’ Hearing those words as a human being is not something you know how to react to. We’re supposed to get through our life with all our limbs. Being a drummer, that’s kind of career ending. You kind of need all the limbs you have to play the instrument you play. Now I throw into the mix that I was only 17 years old.”
Jack then states that within 4 mins he realizes that this moment cannot define him and wants to encourage people to overcome their own personal hardships and obstacles. He ends the video with “If I can play Duality by Slipknot with just one hand, what’s your excuse?”
